2007 Marathon Champs Details

The 2007 Irish MTB Marathon Championships will take place on Saturday September 29th in Carlingford Co. Louth. The course, laid out by Cuchulainn CC, follows a 55km route through some spectacular scenery alongside Carlingford Lough. A shorter route will be available for Junior riders.
Sign on is from 8am at the Foy Community Centre and the race begins with a mass start at 10am. Day race licences will be available.
Showers and changing facilities are provided and accommodation is also available (www.carlingfordbeds.com).
Contact phone numbers:
Johnny McCabe 087-8105919
Aidan McDonald 087-6262998
This event was a lot of fun last year. Just make sure to pay close attention to the course markings (someone always goes astray) and bring plenty of energy food/drinks. There will be a feed stop along the course where you can arrange to pick up your extra bottles/food. It would be within the abilities of most MAD riders as long as you pace yourself properly - it's a greater test of stamina than speed. I hope to see many of you there.

I'll be there. Cant say that I'll be racing, but I'll do the distance as best I can. FYI, a few of us are rumoured to be staying up there saturday night for a few well deserved pints.

The race up there last year was great. A really nice course (watch the map) and a cool atmosphere afterwards. Great food was put on for us. There are lots of other great restaurants around...

That was a good race I have to say. To continue Fergals naughty list though: Richie, Shane G, MORGAN, Oisin F and some others that will come to me in time.
Think everybody rode well on what was a good course. Lots of people giving out to the orgainsers how they got lost, not really their fault, for the most part anyway. There was always a bit of tape if you looked. Sure it would be too easy if you could go flat out without the chance of missing a turn! Myself and Fergal knocked an hour off last years time with 4.14 and 4.15. Not exactly sure where everybody else finished but everybody finished! Sean did fairly well I think, somewhere in the sub 4 hours.
Congrats to all and shame on those who went to Djouce or stayed in bed instead of coming. Think the course was a fair bit shorter than last year, but some of the single track was fairly spectactular. The first section had a couple of KMs of swooping, downhill singletrack which was deadly.
Cheers to Fergal and Cormac for the lifts!

I agree with Steve, but will add Karl, John H, Graham, Paddy, and others to the naughty list. If I could do it in 5hrs 18mins, other people could have done at least that time if not much better. Shame on all of yiz.
Congrats to all who took part, the weather certainly made a great course a bit hairy in places. The marking out of the course could have been better, but it was ok for the most part. That said, signs counting down the distance left towards the end of the course would have been nice, ie 5kms left, 4kms left etc. But all in all, a great day out!! Although i was too knackered to have pints when we got home.

great achievement everyone who finished, a great test of a mtb'er for sure!
Roadies were totally useless on the singletrack - they could move on the road but put something slightly technical in front of them and watch how crap they are - Steve will testify to this :-)
yeah, an hour or more off our time last year kept us grinning at the finish line, excellent result Ryan Sherlock 2nd place Elites!
some superfast downhill singletrack with enough ruts, gulleys and holes to have you bunnyhopping like a demented rabbit.
Good to see that Inga in fact had not been kidnapped and is actually alive and back biking again -new bike and all!
A great turn out by MAD - I reckon the best represented club by far on the day!
I think we'll add Club Champ points to everyone who took part as it's one tough race regardless of your fitness level or experience and great show of club strength
Please add your name to the list so we know who took part on the day, offhand I recall:
Scrivo, Sean Downey, Conor, Bren, Mel, Ryan, Inga, Shane L, Ciaran, Rachel C, Fergal, Cormac
I'm sure there were a few more....

Dont forget "Chief Water Carrier", and my morale booster, Aine. A tough job to stand in the rain at the aerials for 3 hours handing out bottles to everyone, even non-MAD members!

Stephen said…
Yeah!!! Almost forgot about that! Aine was a huge help. I would not have liked to be one of those people scrambling for their food and bottle under a 3 rock sized hill of glucose dowsed tourine. Please send on my thanks Conor!!!

They are usually the people that are interested in things a lot of us aren't. Just so you know, I'm not into that... That Tom lad is raring for it tho :P

Fergal said…
ooops - yes indeed - thanks a bunch to Aine for the help, it was like seeing an oasis in the desert "oooh lovely, caffeine, glucose, carbs, taurine!" everything a going biker needs to keep going!
Steve - it was over 1hr 15 mins knocked off our time last year! surely in part due to Aine's excellent support !!
