Spins for the Week

What's in the box?In a display of unprecedented organisation we can let you know what's happening this weekend - and it's only Tuesday! This is sure to herald great things for MAD in 2008.

First off Tom is promising a Saturday Spin of Pain. After seeing his choice of underwear we all know what he means. The route is from Taylors up over Three Rock, Prince Williams Seat, Crone and back along Military Road. Possibly returning via Masseys wood. This is not a spin for the unwary and the pace will be chafing. Meet at Taylors at 10am.

There will also be the usual Saturday early morning road training spin - let me know if you want to come along.

On Sunday you can choose between two options - let's call them "the easy spin" and "the savage spin".

The easy spin begins in Djouce Lower Car Park Ballinastoe (venue changed due to damp) at 10am. This will be suitable for anyone but beginners would find it challenging. Then again, who doesn't like a challenge? Contact Martin for further details.
The savage spin leaves Taylors Three Rock just after 10am heads up over Three Rock and continues on to Prince Willies and on and on down to Powerscourt. Following sausage rolls at the snack shack it'll be a fast ride back to town on the road. Conor holds all the secret information about this spin.

We'll be accepting 2008 MAD membership fees and forms on all these spins. Cycling Ireland 2008 membership and race licences can now be purchased on their website too.

I'm not sure the Powerscourt Waterfall shop is open at this time of year. Would be good to make sure in advance otherwise you'll have a mutiny on your hands.

I remember that a couple of months ago. I cried, I wont lie about it. Took a bite out of Fergal as pay back.

Watch out Conor, people change when theyre really hungry, cold and the playground is closed....

Sure I'll whistle for a St Bernard to come with a mini keg of Brandy! Now you mention it, it was closed over the crimbo too. I'm sure there is somewhere to get coffee in Enniskerry?!?

Hi Jackie - there's no easy spin planned for Saturday at the moment. Would you like to organise something?

hey conor, speaking of st. bernards, there was a massive st. bernard roaming around masseys today, it was as big as my bike - anyone who has seen my bike knows how massive that really is. i think it belonged to the stable at the bottom entrance of masseys.

someone's gonna have to bring a flask of coffee for Powerscourt!

i can't! i was meant to go to Djouce with the easy spin on sunday but due to the lack of a lift and being invited to my sisters for dinner, i will have to miss the spin.

however, there might be time for a quick spin up to 3rock, if anyone is interested?

Well what can I say,-"I asketh and MAD giveth..."..the pain came forth today, and is still coming forth, I'm too tired and my arms are too sore to write much on it, but suffice to say the 5 of us had a great spin, cracking our way through ice capped puddles, going over the bars, into the bars and under the bars...it's a great route, highly recommended 4/5

You the man Tom. What a spin! Have not had one like that in a very long time. We knew once we saw the aerial's fireroad with a thick sheet of ice, we were in for a fun spin. Not going to write a full report. Needless to say, it was a really deadly spin. Nothing beats riding on ice at full tilt!!! Cheers, Graham, Fergal, Oisin, and Tom!

Savage Spin report 12 Jan 2008:
    ===============================

Well that was a great spin, it had it all; the wocas, gruelling painful climbs, terrifying high-speed rock-strewn descents,

sheets of ice, icy rocks, acts of daredevil-dom, sketchy steep-hill drops with wobbly arms, talk of free range chickens, forgotten helmets, fishy talk from

Graham, sexy talk from Tom (who else), mud, schlomp, superfast singletrack, surprise drainage channels, crunchy

    muck, virgin ice-coatings on puddles, uphill over-the-bars, level-ground over-the-bars, downhill over-the-

bars, wheelspins on the boneshaker, 80mm vs 160mm, stiff-necks, Tortilla chips & muddy faces, Masseys with lots of speed and scary roots, loads of Maxxis, ...the list goes on...what else....

    Well now.........
it all started when Silly Steve forgot his helmet, but luckily Tom had a spare so after a quick blast out to Milltown all was well.

Meantime the lads were trying to fix Toms gears, they were quite shocked by the overall condition of Toms bike - there is more play in that machine than there has been in Hugh Hefners mansion since the late 1960s!
the rear linkage was shocking - rattling like a skeleton in the wind, the headset and wheel bearings have also suffered a very hard life, and are still suffering.

I'd say Tom would kick our asses if he got himself a new bike - how he manages to get 10ft past his front door never mind the awful battering the bikes took on yesterdays spin I'll never know...it's uncanny... he brings on The Power and off he goes

Up to Fairy - a tough slog but it was great weather so no real bother

After a brief bit of confusion after coming out on the road after the wocas we caught up with Tom and Graham on the climb up towards Willies

ran into Eoin Keith and a few epic boyos on the way
Stepped on the gas and we dropped those suckas like a cold bag of chips and up we continued.

the new draingae channels added a bit of entertainment, as did the nice new rock gardens, I'll be stealing some of those rocks....

we then turned right and up a boneshaker-style long climb
belted down the far side of that climb, crunching ice and bulldozing rocks out of Grahams way...
an impressive degree of bike control was shown by Graham on a day which REALLY suited big bikes, though he may have lost count of the quantity of over the bars incidences he had :-)

continued along trails which were all new for me and pretty technical - very enjoyable

Reached the top of the next climb and Steve, Oisin and myself attempted a steep run-down a section
Oisin was up first and met his doom at the end and over the bars into a painful neck-compressing impact - he looked a bit shook and had a sore neck for the rest of the spin but was otherwise intact thankfully
Steve was next down with no probs
After a quick first hesitation I went down and was like a jelly man according to the lads with the bars all over the shop but made it down ok, Graham has a video of it

Then after a quick chat about poultry and peanut butter, off again booting down more icy lunar landscape
brakes were NOT an option on a trail of this slidderyness

Tom attempted the ice-glazed off-camber rock slab and paid the appropriate price - nice try though Tom!

Then a quick regroup and down a sketch-tastic descent- the big bikes gobbling up the madness that was thrown at them - loved it.

A quick fill of water bottles with stream water onto the road for a bit then off right onto another great trail eventually bringing us to the top of Cruagh

Brilliant bit of superfast windy humpy singletrack had us whoopin' and hollerin' like cowboys in a brothel
then into Cruagh car park - along the wicked trail paralell to the road then back on the road to Masseys - ooohh sketch to the max with the schlomp, roots and soggy leaves, it started to rain down pretty heavy now but undeterred we rocketed down and arrived grinning and mud-spattered at the fence
finally the road back to Taylors
and stopped for a chat and Grahams tortillas remarking to ourselves who odd we must look to passers by, laughing, filthy, eating tortillas.... odd carry on indeed but if only they knew the full story of the day they might get to understand the feeling of general awesomic deadliness you get after a spin of that calibre.

Thanks to Oisin for the route - really good, hope your neck is ok!

    'til the next time.....

    Howdy all

Poked me head out the curtains this morning and wished I went on the savage spin on Sat! With the rain lashing down, low clouds, I decided the best thing to do was find an excuse to not go on the Sunday Savage Spin. I did my usual trick of texting Conor with the '...so what's the weather like with you?'. As bloomin usual, Conor was full of beans and half way to Taylors, so I had no option, grrrrr....

After the obligatory 10 minutes pointing at bits of each others bikes in Taylors, and figuring out the best way to keep them clean, it was clear that no one else was turning up. And with the rain still coming down, we ruled out the planned Savage spin, or a loop around 3rock, and settled for Djouce. By the time we got to the lower car park things had improved a lot weather wise, so we set off up to XTC with the rain spitting down, and the roar of Powerscourt waterfall in the distance ....

As usual, XTC was holding up well, those berms are defo getting better with time and use. After that we followed the NPS route dropping down trails / rivers, onto the fire road and into benchcut, which is a little worse for wear in places. As we dropped down the waterfall became irresistible so we made a bee line over. This ended up being the wettest part of the day, as we could not help but go jumping around in the mist being churned up

Popped down to the now closed shop for a quick break and out of the fog came Ben, Derek and Dave who also had been bashing around the trails. After a quick go off of Ben's Santa Cruz, it was back on the trail, taking the leisurely Earl's Drive, and red road. Which set us up for a larf-a-second blast down Ack through bog, and oh-so slippery roots. Queue first incident of the day where Conor managed an endo which left his bike up a tree - now that must be a first! Safely making it down to the "dry" lake, we were drawn to GC. It's a bit cut up in places, but otherwise a class trail - despite meeting walkers - with dogs! It was so good we did it a second time - queue 2nd incident. Overjoyed at clearing the large rock slab, I managed an endo myself directly after it. Luckily my knees broke the fall... unluckily they landed on pointy rocks. As I picked myself up, I noticed some concerned walkers looking down at me from the trail above - so with a pained smile and wave, I was off again - almost running over a concerned Conor, bounding up the trail. Unfortunately a small chip of paint had come off my bike - surely the low-light of the spin ;-)

After that it was a spin of savage speed up to the middle car park and one more run down XTC before back to the lower car park. Finally, there were many, many hours of bike and rider cleaning, less said the better there...

Only myself and Ritchie braved the weather today. Met at Taylors, then changed venue to Djouce. Had a blast in all the mud and water and mud. Had a good 3 hours, fast pace at times. Met up with Ben, Derek, and English Dave at Powerscourt (closed) and then headed up, up, around, and down. Through mud, schlomp, and a lot of water.
Good craic all in all. Might try for a re-run of 3rock to powerscourt next week.

    Stay tuned....

Hope your knees are ok Ritchie, and I wanna see them pics!

There was indeed a bit of excitement on the road spin. Our original plan was to head up the Sally Gap and return via Enniskerry. It was way too icy on Saturday morning so we decided to head around the Blessington lakes instead. We turned off the main road in Brittas, down a frosty back lane. All was going well, straight line, slightly uphill. Then we got to the first corner and off slides Sean, Mel slides off into him and I plough into the melee. Result - I think Sean broke his hip and my knee rotated 360 degrees. I fell off again a minute later - more pain. Decided this wasn't such a good idea so headed back to the N81 and did an awesome 80km among the traffic. There are rumors that the whole incident was concocted by the Downey/Kilkenny Axis of Evil as part of a MAD takeover plot.
