Those are two sound ideas Tom, very very sound indeed! I hear St Annes park in Clontarf is better for the getting of air though. Maybe spin out there some sunday or something. I would be well up for Wales, have wanted to do that for ages but someone (Tom) needs to take charge, set a date and stick to it. We tried this last year and everyone was busy etc on certain dates so couldnt go ahead.

I'd be up for a trip to Wales around then too. I have heard a lot of good things about the trails over there (some say too well put together though).

I would say to practice jumping over at St. Annes. I've been up around Marley a couple of times and it's not that exciting for getting air time (not that I actually know how to jump).

I know a group of the Epic lads went there. I'll talk to them and see what the story is. I think the basic just of the thing is that we rent some sort of house/b&b/hostel type accomadation. Take a car + bikes via the ferry and all the trails are marked so a guide is not needed.

Cody Brenin (some something like that) is the usual place I hear about when people talk about Wales...

tom, I would definately be interested in a trip to Wales.

I have been to the trails in South Wales, Afan and Cwmcarn.
Afan has three main trails, which are well signposted. We did the two shorter ones, the penhydd trail and the wall, which were quite good. There is a nice climb at the start and some nice singletrack decents through forests.

Cwncarn is more simple; a punishing climb followed by a great descent. The decent is fairly rocky but very fast. You just have to ignore the big drop on you left hand side, great for focusing the mind!!

The trails are not that technical. But like most trails the faster you go the more interesting they become.

The site shane mentioned is good, there are good helmet-cam videos.

Facilities were good, with cafes and places to wash your bikes.

Well that's my two cents worth.

    Cormac

    Hi there,

have done lots of riding in Wales, coed-y-Brenin is def a great place to go. There are lots of good places to stay too. There is one place, it's a pub, which had a great campsite out the back and a fantastic shower block. There pub is also rider friendly and does great pub grub, just what you need after a great days riding.. Most places have somewhere to wash bikes and everyone is really really friendly and helpful! (Ok, so I like Wales...)

I would DEF be up for a trip to Wales.. all levels of rider catered for ;)

Tom, if you're planning on planning this trip I can give you a hand.. can't wait to get back to Wales...

speaking of which, will be there this weekend (minus bike) - woohoo!!

i'd definitely be on for a trip, myself and the missus were thinkin of going at some stage, that website young shane posted is about the best info on the trails, theres loads of B&Bs near any of the trails that cater for bikes as well. Dolgellau seems to be a pretty decent place for staying, close to coed y brenin and its has a few pubs, not that there'd be load of drinkin done.....

oh and yeah i'd be on for jumpin, might even get my old bmx from the north for a laugh.....well for eveyone else

As ever Tom, you come out with the goods - I can forsee a nomination for you on the MAD committee; "Official Outing Organiser" or a title to the effect... I sent off for a brochure for mtb in Wales some time ago and it looked very impressive, I'd love to go.
jumpin' and leppin' about the place in St Annes is also on the cards for some Sat/Sun I reckon

I've been over a couple of times. I'd say go to either Coed-y-Brenin or Betws-y-Coed. Betws is beside the Gwydyr Forest which has the Marin trail and one or two others - it's about one hour's drive from Holyhead. Coed-y-Brenin has at least three trails - it's beside Dolgellau which is less than two hours from Holyhead. The built trails are all signposted and are a deadly buzz. But we always do a natural trail on one of the days. For info on the natural trails the book here on Snowdonia is the biz:
    http://www.bike-fax.com/shop.asp
Here's an example of one of the natural trails in the book (the book gives good directions so well worth the buy):

    Yay/Nay?
    time?
last time we went we met at 10 at the Luas Station near the IFSC ( i think)

Discuss the Wales trip at the AGM? When is it BTW? (The AGM that is, not the Wales trip!)

wow, some of the trails here:
    http://www.mtbbritain.co.uk/helmet_camera_video.html
are just brilliant looking, if Wales is half this good it's going to be excellent

  • At 4:23 p.m., Blogger Stephen said…

Wow... Some of those trails look DEADLY alright.. Pity the lads riding them in that video gallery are soooooo sloooooooow though. Sure we'd cycle UP those trails quicker than they were coming down them!

Hello People! Whats the thoughts on another nice long Saturday spin? Personally id love to go down to Glendalough, I was only down there once, with epic, about a year ago and it was brilliant. So if somebody could work on kidnapping and epic person for Saturdays' spin, that would be great!

    Any other opinions?

  • At 11:40 a.m., Blogger Nigel said…

i hate when people organise good spins when i can't go....well not that i can't. more like i shouldn't stupid mid-terms! i think i'll have to pick either saturday or sunday

  • At 12:26 p.m., Blogger Fergal said…

cool Steve,I've heard some good reports on Glendo. There's a scary-dress-up halloween type DH spin on tomorrow night at Ticknock (http://epicmtb.com/smf/index.php?topic=2322.msg19420)
so I'll ask around at that to see if we can nab an epic head for the day or at least get some directions...
You (or anyone) gonna go to this one on Thurs night? I'll send a mail around. lemme know if u need a lift- sounds like it'll be a laugh, though I don't have any scary outfits - might go to the euro shop and buy a load of cheap halloween make-up, if Judith or one of the girls is there, they can do our make-up for us, we will be like movie stars.....spooky movie stars..

  • At 1:58 p.m., Blogger Paddy said…

    why saturday instead of sunday?

Either way send an email as soon as its organised!

  • At 2:33 p.m., Blogger Stephen said…

Have you not heard Paddy?? Saturday is the new Sunday!

Will give Fergal a hand kidnapping an Epic person on Thursday night to act as our guide I think.. Mail will go out after that!

  • At 2:52 p.m., Blogger Paddy said…

yeah but someone has to go out with the less experienced peoples and beginners (slade this saturday) and so then can't go on these longer spins you keep organising. Thats why we always kept sundays for the longer spins. Anyway, its all fine as long as you take your turn on the beginners spin!

  • At 2:55 p.m., Blogger Stephen said…

Alright thats fair enough Paddy, never thought of that. However, don't you have to be a 'spin leader' to lead beginners> Thought I was told this at some stage and hence did not ever think about beginners.

  • At 3:03 p.m., Blogger Paddy said…

Well yeah kinda .. basically you were a bit too young i think to be leading the spins, but anyone of Tom, fergal, geoff, comittee peoples, judith, ryan, mark etc would be fine for that.

  • At 3:04 p.m., Blogger Fergal said…

we were saying that Saturday is much better for the longer spins as you can go out on Sat night after your big spin and have a clatter of beers and a take-away etc.. and not feel one bit guilty!
An easier-paced/beginners Sunday spin is just right to alleviate a hangover...
I'm surprised it hasn't always been this way...

  • At 3:11 p.m., Blogger Fergal said…

Paddy don't forget myself and Tom's brutal sense of direction, we may need to be struck off that list...

  • At 3:17 p.m., Blogger Paddy said…

Nonsense .. you'd be amazed what you can remember when you get up there.

Plus, if i can find my way around than anyone can.

And finally ... aren't you forgetting about friday nights ... won't somebody think of the friday nights!!

  • At 3:50 p.m., Blogger Fergal said…

look here now young man! - come the start of next year's NPS season there'll be no more of that Friday night carry-on for you - remember; you'll be in Masters then - so you need to start weening yourself off Fridays now, besides - what about all those free-beer Thursday night sessions you're having these days??!!

  • At 4:03 p.m., Blogger Paddy said…

    They're great .. thats what!!

Anyway .. if i'm in masters next year i'll be too old to be goign to pubs wiht their crowdedness and loud musicness.

Anyone seen my pipe and slippers?

  • At 4:41 p.m., Blogger Paddy said…

Shane G ... no offence but you're far too young (and reckless with the jumps) to lead the spin!

  • At 6:21 p.m., Blogger Ryan Sherlock said…

As far as spins are concerned I was thinking of starting a weekly savage series.

Basically, 2-3 hour spins (possibly at night), fast - no stops and you have to hang on to the fastest person (I'll be riding the Enduro over the winter so it will not necessarily be me!) for as long as you can. Basically, a long Sunday spin at about 80% race pace and completed in 2-3 hours.

I was also thinking of opening it up to the other clubs to get the numbers up to around 8 or so, so that if you have to get dropped there will hopefully be people around you. I'll also post the route before hand (as a google earth image or something) so that people know what to expect.

It's been a month since the marathons - it will be soon time to start training for next year :)

    What do you think?

  • At 6:33 p.m., Blogger Paddy said…

Ryan that'd be deadly .. but i stil think you'd be the fastest ... might have to sellotape weights to your legs or something.

Plus, we could even run these at weekends, maybe every two weeks on a sunday so that we'd get a big group and then no one should get dropped too much as people could always split into groups at various speed or something.

  • At 6:50 p.m., Blogger Ryan Sherlock said…

Yeah - sounds like a plan. I'll post something in a couple of days...

    Right,

-Providing I can shake off this cold, I'll be holding hands with the beginners around Slade on Saturday.....but that might be a big "if"......

-Shane, you're not learning anything by driving to an easy spin, spending half the morning standing around and coaxing others down stuff and generally gibbering with CiarĂ¡n like the Energiser bunny. You should try some of the more "intermediate" spins and work up to proper Sunday spins.

    -Ryan,
    Some great ideas there.
Once the CX season is over, I foresee us combining with IMBRC and maybe WORC for Saturday road spins and Sunday MTB, which should get a decent group going....I've spoken to Dave B etc and they're game ball.
That idea about the GPS is brilliant though......

-Sunday is always the traditional big spin day. It's as traditional as MAD convening at the Yellow House. It would make sense if we were to do a good MTB spin of a Saturday then slog through the road spin on Sunday though.

-Tom's bike is cursed, he should sell it to me, for a packet of Revels. Besides, with all these fine women in his life, he won't have time to be cycling anymore.

-Steve's sense of direction should never be trusted, in fact I recommend going the opposite way to wherever he suggests ;-)

    Anything else????
    Sean

The only other this is will you be going to Slade again soon? I love that place.

Let me know about Monday if there is a spin on, but as the Dublin City Marathon is on, we'll prob have to go miles out of the way to get anywhere!

  • At 9:29 a.m., Blogger Mark C said…

ah feck, i won't have the bike ready by saturday, the missus wants to decorate on sunday and i have to do some work on monday.....deadly, enjoy it you buggers

lots of hugs and kisses mark

Good stuff Ryan, personally, if I'm gonna race masters next year (with Paddy alongside me!) I'll need that exact format, as masters is generally double the duration of sports @ 2 hours approx, if I can get used to near race-pace for that length of time, it'll really help. (or I'll die - one or the other)

Sean, WORC/IMBRC are bad enough (read: savage fast) on MTB trails, but thy're TOTAL savages on the road, yourself and Ryan would be the only ones who could keep pace with them on the road.

  • At 12:14 p.m., Blogger Stephen said…

Hey hey hey!! Too much stuff floating around here about me!

Firstly, my sense of direction is just dandy Sean! Just fine! :P

And if anything Fergal is my sidekick! That right Fergal?;) Cheek of you Geoff! I will be having some serious words with all of you next time your out... For shame on all!

The long Saturday spin is going ahead as far as I know......

  • At 1:43 p.m., Blogger Paddy said…

Ok then stunt monkey sidekick who is frequently lost ... but in future keep the good long spins for sundays when the rest of us can make them. don't mind sean and his road riding malarky!! He hugs people from the IMBRC anyway!

  • At 1:54 p.m., Blogger Fergal said…

    Sidekicks and Stuntmonkeys!
deadly name for an MTB flick starring the cast of MAD eh?

Right! onto some very serious business - who is going up Ticknock dressed as a total eejit tonight?
(I am, think Steve is, and we better not be the only MAD heads there or there'll be blood spilled/drank!!)
I bought some rubbish down the shop so we can 'decorate' you if needs be; spidery-webs, axes, face paint etc...
Geoff - I wanna see you there for a start!..and Mick you too! who else haven't I seen in ages.....Morgan --where's Morgan? Ryan - you too - bring the big scary bike
