The Wicklow 200

This isn't strictly mountainbike related but the Wicklow 200 takes place this weekend. For the first time in ages it doesn't clash with the POG Challenge (NPS #4) so people can take part in both events. The full route is fairly tough, with four major climbs and 2500m of climbing. There's also the option of doing a shorter 100km routh which is a bit more manageable. A few of us will be there on Sunday - let us know if you're coming too.

200km (hopefully) :)
It should be good! Or at least, really really long. What distance is everyone else doing?

I think I'll be just doing the 100 because:
I'll be one year older that day
I won't have slept much
I may be hungover
I haven't trained
It'll hurt
I need to concerve my energy for the POG
But I'll see how I'm feeling on the morning...

Ack! I'm very concerned by this talk of 200. What happened to a leisurely little 100k jaunt?
I don't think I'd be up for the full distance, I'd imagine that my legs would fall off long before the finish.

Mel and I completed the 200 yesterday in beautiful sun shine :) Did any of the rest of you do the spin?
A few people were asking me about MAD (I was wearing the jersey) maybe we have a few more roadie recruits :)

Hello,
I just found this site with a bit of Googling.
I completed the W200 on Sunday on my heavy, old mountain bike (with some adjustments and fix-ups). I only saw a few other people on mountain bikes or hybrids, though. One other cyclist even commented "You're doing the Wicklow 200 on *that* thing?! You're a ballsy guy!".

Mel ended up doing the W200 on my XC bike too. The only things we changed were putting a road cassette and slick (ish) tires on. Fair dues to anyone doing it on a mountain bikes, but my hat really goes off to the grannies/granddads that did it on their 40 year old bikes with baskets and a severe lack of WD40. That was amazing!

Wow, I missed the granny bikes. I guess it's good to know I wasn't the most amateur person out there on the day..
I bought a pair of 1.5" semi-slick tyres, but I could really have used a better cassette at times.

There were a lot more people out on MTBs and commuter bikes in the 100. It was brilliant, a mix of all abilities. A lot of people who wouldn't normally participate in races, or cycling events, it shows great determination to see them all out.
I have great admiration for anybody who had a shot at the 200 though, it's a fantastic achievement to cover that sort of distance in a single day.
