Its a MAD Bank Holiday ...

Well folks, time once again to find out whats happening this weekend.

First off there's Shane "No longer a Mystery Man since meeting him in Wales" Lavelles' evening spin on ticknock. Meeting at the carpark there at 8pm. Get in touch with him on 086 3195936 if you need any more info.

Friday features a spin around kindlestown, meeting in the carpark there at 10am.

Saturday has an early morning spin starting at 7am from the hellfire carpark for those of various levels. Contact Shane Lavelle for this one.

On Saturday there'll also be a big long spin meeting at 10am at Crone. This will be a "Savage" on the MAD spin-o-meter so only for the fit, fast and mentally challenged. Bring lots of food, water, tubes, puncture repair kits, spare wheels, frame bearings etc. The route will be taking in Crone, Maulin, Djouce, The Boardwalks, Lugalla (POG Course), Ballinstoe (Blast Course), Djouce, XTC, Powerscourt, and finally back to Crone.

Saturday also features Martins Magical Mystery Tour, meeting at Taylors 3 Rock pub at 10am. Contact him on 087 0515057 for more details. But since its magical and mysterious he mightn't tell you anything. This is a fun spin and will be suitable for all and sundry.

On Sunday is the first round of the DH NPS in Cloon woods. Run by EPIC this is sure to be a cracking event with the soft sound of ambulance sirens providing some atmosphere. Our very own downhill people, Steve, Fergal and Robb should be taking part (no guarantees though as i ain't been speaking to them), so go along and support or cycle down there to support. EPIC may still be looking for some extra marshalls for the weekend (mainly on the sunday i presume). If anyone is going down to watch and wants to help them out and get to see all thats involved in organising a race check out this post .

Monday, hmmm, magical mystery tour maybe? Again keep an eye out in the next day or two and i'll update things.

I'm thinking of continuing the trail building on Sunday after being inspired by Wales.
I'll likely be up there from 9am for 3 or 4 hours if anyone wants to come along, any help appreciated.
I'll post back here later to confirm that I'm going.

PS: Nigel, whereabouts did you hide the rake/saws last time?

The wood and rakes were left at the start of Ryan's new trail. They were still there last Sunday evening

    Morning all!
Just thought I'd say hi to all the folks from MAD we met in the carpark after the Climach-x in Wales last saturday... shame we didn't see you all at Penmachno. Did you go? It was mental!

I'm not trying to hide my identity by the way, I'm just not a regular blogger... and my name's Nick.

No, we didn't make it down there, but heard it's a great spot, will add it to the list of what we need to see the next time...such a great place for biking, everyone had a ball

Hi Nick, Yeah we were loving that climachx trail, esp the final descent : ), well worth the climb back up,...is Penmachno much different, more technical or what?..

    Hey guys,

wonderful day for a spin! It was so lovely up in Kindlestown - the single track was very Wales-esque! Great group of 9 out, pity some people had to miss it through work :(

Won't be out for the spin on Saturday but might make Monday so hope to see you all then.

Also hi to Nick! Hope you enjoyed the rest of the riding it Wales, it's a great place!

    hey everyone,

sorry i couldnt join the mad spin of k/town today, me and oisín fitzsavage went for spin of 3rock, fairycastle and the surrounding forests and it was excellent. the conditions up there are great, very dry and spain like...we did a descent from fairycastle down to the turnoff that daggets is on, it was great! wish it was longer though...

see ye tomorrow for the mystery spin!

What an absolutely savage day we had today! everything was perfectamundo!

  • At 10:02 p.m., Blogger Stephen said…

Yeah I agree with Nigel, brilliant day. Pace was really steady, doubt we were stopped for more than 20mins over the whole thing which was cool! Some deadly descending in there....

Saturday was brilliant for sure - most of the MAD hard-core heroes were out- Nigel, Steve, Tom, Judith, Paddy
Tom was going like the feckin' clappers yesterday - don't know where he was getting those bursts of power from!!!
Stevie S looked like he was feeling the effects of a week of pizza and easy times in Italy in places, but was still able to sprint past cars with Tom coming out of Powwerscourt (don't try that at home kids!) near the end of the spin.
Commiseration to Morgan and Oisin B who were laid-up with non-fully functioning bodies.
Morgan, has your hard-tail neck returned to full-suss yet?

Such weather! - has the island of Ireland been picked-up and dropped down by the Canaries?
The sleepers was the highlight of my day - never did them before, got some great video too, will try to make a mini-movie of the days trails later, ran out of space for the Blast course though, but just as well coz it wasn't the fastest descent I've ever had...
I made-up for that poor performance though with 2 no-dab stream crossings and down the rocky steps to the bottom of the valley without a dab in sight, same for Steve - it felt good!

...all this and much more for only 20 euro a year???!!!! Biking with Ireland's Premier MTB Club - you'd be mad to be doing anything else.....

Yeah what a great spin on Saturday, superb weather, smiling faces and exciting trails,The boardwalks are great craic and all the walkers despite being mystified by our presence gladly obliged and let us past, walkers are human too you know,...
Was loving XTC and the following descent,... must practice trialsin' Nigel was bending his bike around those bloody corners!..Even the long and tough climbs were 'enjoyable'?!..It was an excellent day out and felt short enough depsite getting 50ish km under our belts...
    MAD-nothing else comes close

  • At 6:34 p.m., Blogger Stephen said…

We should cover everything in board-walks.. I don't want to cycle on anything else anymore... Imagine being 15 foot above the liffey flying down one of them! Think they should be a feature of some course we build (whats the craic with the NPS all?) There are a load of seemingly unwanted sleepers in GOTD if anybody is willing to help me pikey them?

alright lads and lassies, sounds likes theres plenty happening at home, i'll see y'all next week, still boardin in whistler at the mo, life isn't half bad at the moment, no bikin though unfortunately too much snow on the trails but this place is definitely worth a visit in the summer....alrighty adios amgios

    marko

Steve - those sleepers lying on the ground up in GOTD are going to be built into steps on that steep bit for walkers. In the interests of keeping good relations with all users of that area I think its best to leave them. Although I've been tempted to knick them many times!

  • At 6:29 p.m., Blogger Richie said…

Lads, how long did it take ye to do the 50kms?? Did that include Crone, Maulin, Djouce, The Boardwalks, Lugalla (POG Course), Ballinstoe (Blast Course), Djouce, XTC, Powerscourt, and finally back to Crone??? And did anyone happen to map the route? I'd like to do a spin like (could not on Sat cos was still sufferin' from the auld bag on the noggin so went on the easy spin),I just need to get a rough idea of the pace yiz were setting...

  • At 10:02 p.m., Anonymous Anonymous said…

I'd be keen on that spin as well. I'm not afraid of the distance but need an idea of the pace. Dont want to hold up faster boys, but i want to do longer spins, 40 kms + ?I need to see if I'm able for the wicklow 100 !!!!

  • At 10:03 p.m., Blogger Nigel said…

sent you a mail there richie....if it's richie close that is!

  • At 10:07 p.m., Blogger Nigel said…

    and you too conor.

    Anyone else?

  • At 11:43 a.m., Blogger Unknown said…

    Hi guys,

I'm thinking of doing the Wicklow 100, but I'm not as fast or fit as Richie or Conor.

The YH - Cloon spin was about the 40km distance. Sorry about the slow pace that day.. I don't go very fast!

  • At 11:45 p.m., Blogger Nigel said…

the wicklow 100 is a road event rachael!!! you need to do road training to make sure you can do the 100km - presuming you haven't done it before. if you don't have a road bike then put slick tyres on your mountainbike
